Dresden Microdisplay GmbH (DMD) has been founded in April 2010 as Spin-off from the OLED-Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (FhG IPMS) in Dresden, now called COMEDD, which is nowadays part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology (FhG FEP).

DMD builds on experience from meanwhile five OLED-microdisplay generations and is based on the work & experience of former company MicroEmissive Displays Ltd. (MED) from Edinburgh, Scotland, which has developed OLED-Microdisplays from 1999-2008 - combined with R&D experience and results from Fraunhofer COMEDD, which is working since 2003 on different OLED microdisplays technologies.

To address the need for higher brightness, which cannot be addressed with todays OLED technology, DMD has complemented its offering with LCoS based microdisplays in 2017.

DMD deals with the development, production, marketing and sales of OLED- and LCoS-based microdisplays and derived components, like lenses, optical engines up to full monocular or binocular modules, containing the electronic to drive the microdisplays, as well.
